Do you need to give biometrics for a Canada visa from Nigeria?

The biometric instruction letter — and its 30-day clock

In short: once IRCC accepts your application, it issues a biometric instruction letter inside your IRCC account. You must complete biometrics within 30 days of the date on that letter — miss the window and the application can be returned as incomplete or refused outright. The letter does two things: it confirms the requirement applies to you, and it starts a clock. Thirty days sounds generous until a VAC appointment slot is three weeks out, or your passport is tied up in a parallel application. Read your IRCC status page the day the letter lands, not the day you remember to check — the same account that shows “biometrics requested” is the one that later confirms whether you gave them on time. Your visa’s processing-time clock typically starts once biometrics are given, not before, so a late appointment delays everything that follows. Where Nigerians give biometrics

IRCC does not collect biometrics itself; it contracts outside operators to run Visa Application Centres worldwide, the same model UK Visas & Immigration uses through VFS Global at Lagos and Abuja for UK applications. Your biometric instruction letter names the correct VAC for your file and links the booking step — that letter, not a search result, is the address worth trusting. If it lists more than one Nigeria location, book whichever is genuinely reachable; IRCC does not penalise you for the choice.

Giving biometrics, step by step

1. Submit and pay for your Canada application (visitor visa, study permit, work permit or PR) online, including the biometric fee if it applies to you.
2. Watch your IRCC account for the biometric instruction letter — it confirms the requirement and starts your 30-day clock.
3. Check whether IRCC already shows you exempt because of biometrics given in the last 10 years, before booking anything.
4. Book your appointment at the Visa Application Centre named in your letter.
5. Attend with the letter, your passport and any listed documents to give fingerprints and a photo — nothing else happens at the centre.
6. Keep your receipt, then track the rest of your application on your IRCC status page.

The 10-year rule — when you don’t have to give biometrics again

This is the rule most repeat applicants miss. A Nigerian who gave biometrics for a 2023 study permit and applies for a 2027 work permit is inside the 10-year window — IRCC’s system checks this automatically at intake and tells you if you’re covered. It can still ask for fresh biometrics at its discretion (a changed appearance, a flagged file), but that is the exception, not the default. Confirm your own case through IRCC’s online tool rather than assuming either way; a skipped VAC trip and a skipped CAD $85 fee are worth thirty seconds of checking.

Who is exempt from giving biometrics

In short: children under 14, most applicants aged 79 and older applying for a visitor visa, study permit or work permit, and heads of state, heads of government and accredited diplomats — plus their families — do not give biometrics at all. The age exemption at 79 does not extend to permanent residence applications — a PR applicant of any age gives biometrics unless another exemption applies. Anyone between 14 and 79 applying for a Canada visa, study permit or work permit from Nigeria should assume biometrics are required and let IRCC’s own tool confirm the exception, rather than the other way round.

The biometrics fee scam

In short: the biometric fee is fixed, paid directly to IRCC inside your own application, and nobody can pay it “on your behalf” for a markup or fast-track it for a fee. Biometrics cannot be given by proxy — the fingerprints and photo have to be yours, taken in person at the VAC, so no agent can “handle” this step for you regardless of what they charge. The only legitimate payment is the CAD amount above, made inside your own IRCC application. If someone quotes a naira lump sum with no fee-versus-application breakdown, or asks you to send money to a personal account for “biometrics processing,” treat it the same way this site treats every other visa-agent scam: a red flag, not a shortcut.
