Your route out of Nigeria is decided by what you already have, not by which country sounds best. A sponsorable skill points you toward UK work sponsorship. A degree plus roughly ₦18-24 million in provable funds points you toward the study route. A strong profile with no job offer at all still qualifies for Canada’s Express Entry — the one lane here that needs no employer. The greener pasture instinct is real. Arithmetic decides which route gets you there. This guide explains how to relocate to Canada from Nigeria, and to the UK, priced end to end in ₦, with the three dead ends that drain savings for nothing.

Fee range across routes

~₦270,000 for a UK visitor visa with no PR path. ~₦30.9m in provable funds for Canada PR, family of 4.

Processing time once qualified

~3 weeks from biometrics (UK). IRCC's 6-month post-ITA standard (Canada PR).

Where you apply

Direct on the government portal. gov.uk, canada.ca. Never through a "japa agent."

What you already have decides your route

In short: four starting positions predict which japa route works — a sponsorable in-demand skill, a degree plus roughly ₦18-24m in funds, a strong points profile with no job offer, or none of the three yet. Match your position first; pick the country second. Source: gov.uk Skilled Worker visa rules; IRCC Express Entry criteria, cross-checked 25 July 2026.

Nigerians asking which country is easiest are asking the wrong question. The right one is which asset you already hold. Every plan to relocate abroad starts here, whatever your reason to emigrate from Nigeria.

What you already have

Route

The catch

A sponsorable, in-demand skill + a real job offer

UK Skilled Worker / Health and Care Worker

Your salary must clear the threshold. Finding a genuine sponsor is the real bottleneck.

A recent degree + ~₦18-24m in verifiable funds

UK Student visa (or Canada study permit)

Funds must sit in your own name for the full evidence window. Tuition sits on top.

A strong CRS-scoring profile, no job offer required

Canada Express Entry (PR route)

No employer needed. Your score must clear whatever cut-off that week's draw sets.

None of the above yet

Build one first — don't buy a visitor visa and hope

Visitor status carries no work rights. It blocks switching to almost any long-term route.

How to decide your route in 5 steps

In short: decide in this order — list the asset you already hold, match it to one route, read that route’s own guide, verify every agent or sponsor against a free public register, then budget the full landed cost in ₦ rather than the headline visa fee. Source: gov.uk register of licensed sponsors; canada.ca Express Entry eligibility, checked 25 July 2026.

Treat this list as your japa checklist before you spend a naira:

  1. List what you have: a sponsorable skill, a recent degree, ~₦18m+ in provable funds, or none of these yet.
  2. Match it against the table above and pick one lane, not a country.
  3. Read that lane’s dedicated guide before you pay for anything.
  4. Verify any agent, sponsor or college against the free public register — see how to avoid visa agent scams in Nigeria.
  5. Budget the full landed cost in ₦ — visa fee plus proof of funds or IHS plus flights, not just the headline fee.

Four routes, priced end to end in ₦

In short: the cheapest route to start — a UK visitor visa at ~₦270,000 — carries no path to settlement. The study route locks up ₦18-24m in funds you must show, not spend. The work route spends roughly ₦7.8m outright once you have a sponsor. The PR route shows ₦16.6-30.9m in savings with no employer required at all. Source: gov.uk visa-fees and IHS calculator; IRCC settlement-funds table, checked 25 July 2026.

Paying from Nigeria: naira cards decline on UKVI and most foreign government payment screens. Use a dollar card, a domiciliary-funded prepaid card, or someone abroad to pay — the full decision tree.

The cost to relocate (₦) differs by route, not by country. Budget the full landed figure below, not just the visa fee:

Route

₦ cost (2026)

What it actually is

Elapsed time

UK Standard Visitor

~₦270,000, visa fee only

Spent, not locked up. No IHS, no work rights, no PR path.

~3 weeks from biometrics

UK Student visa

~₦18.4m (outside London) to ~₦24m (inside London) shown, plus ~₦1.1m fee and ~₦1.55m/year IHS spent

Funds are largely shown, not spent. Tuition is separate.

~3 weeks decision, but intake-gated (Sept/Jan)

UK Skilled Worker (single, 3-year CoS)

~₦7.83m (visa fee £819 + 3-year IHS £3,105), spent

The CoS itself costs the worker ₦0. The employer pays £239.

~3 weeks once your CoS is issued

Canada Express Entry, no job offer required

~₦16.6m (single) to ~₦30.9m (family of 4) shown, not spent

Settlement funds at ₦1,132/CAD, IRCC's own indexed table.

6 months from invitation, per IRCC's standard; the invitation itself is draw-dependent

Figures are this site’s own conversion at ₦1,540/$ (July 2026), giving roughly ₦1,996/£ and ₦1,132/CAD, not official naira prices. Full fee tables: UK Skilled Worker visa from Nigeria, UK Student visa from Nigeria, Canada proof of funds from Nigeria.

The study route: cost, time, and where it breaks

In short: a UK Student visa needs a CAS from your sponsor, funds held for a fixed window, and the Immigration Health Surcharge paid up front — roughly ₦18.4m in provable funds outside London, on top of tuition. Canada’s study-permit route runs the same principle with a locked GIC instead. Source: gov.uk “Student visa: money you need”; IRCC study-permit financial requirements.

The study route rewards a bank balance and a genuine admission, not a job offer. In the UK, funds must sit in your own name, or a parent’s with the right evidence, for 28 straight days before you apply. Canada’s GIC works the same way: locked with a Canadian bank before your permit is approved, sized to your province. IRCC updates the figure periodically — confirm it on canada.ca before you commit tuition money. One trap sits inside this route: a cheap college diploma sold as a fast track to a work permit. It’s covered in full below, under dead ends.

The sponsored work route: cost, time, and the job-offer wall

In short: UK Skilled Worker and Health and Care Worker visas both require a job offer from a Home Office-licensed sponsor as a hard gate — no offer, no application, whatever funds sit in your account. The visa itself then runs about ₦7.83m in worker-borne cost for a single applicant on a 3-year CoS. Source: gov.uk, “Skilled Worker visa: Overview,” checked 25 July 2026.

This route rewards a skill, not savings. Once you have a genuine offer, the paperwork moves in about three weeks from biometrics. Reaching that offer is the real bottleneck, and it commonly takes far longer than the visa step itself. Which jobs qualify is not a matter of opinion: gov.uk publishes the eligible-occupation list with a going rate against each SOC code, and your offer has to sit on it. Check your own SOC code there before you believe any agent’s claim about “shortage roles.” The full sponsor-verification method sits on UK Skilled Worker visa from Nigeria. One scam pattern targets this route hardest; it’s named below, under dead ends.

The PR-points route: no job offer needed

In short: Canada’s Express Entry is the one route here that does not require a job offer — your score against age, education, work experience and language decides your invitation, not an employer’s signature. Settlement funds still apply: roughly ₦16.6m for a single applicant, or ₦30.9m for a family of four, at ₦1,132/CAD (July 2026). Source: IRCC, Federal Skilled Worker Program criteria; canada.ca settlement-funds table.

This is the PR pathway proper, not a study or work route with settlement bolted on. Your Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score is compared against each draw’s published cut-off. There is no single fixed number — IRCC posts every round’s result on its own site. A job offer adds points if you have one, but its absence doesn’t disqualify you the way it would on the UK’s Skilled Worker route. The funds evidence sits on Canada proof of funds from Nigeria. For the acronyms — CRS, ITA, COPR — see the visa glossary.

Can you japa without IELTS or a job offer?

In short: neither belief holds across every route. UK Skilled Worker skips a language test only if your degree was taught in English. Canada’s Express Entry treats a language test as mandatory, with no exemption. A job offer is a hard requirement on UK work routes but not on Canada’s PR route at all. Source: gov.uk “Skilled Worker visa: Your job”; IRCC document checklist.

Question

UK Skilled Worker

UK Student

Canada Express Entry

IELTS required?

No, if your degree was taught in English.

Set by your sponsor, not always IELTS.

Yes. Mandatory, no exemption.

Job offer required?

Yes. Hard gate.

No. Admission-based.

No. Adds points, not required.

These two beliefs are also the two claims agents monetise hardest. Verify both against your specific route, not a general rumour.

Three dead ends that drain ₦ savings for nothing

In short: the three patterns that cost Nigerians the most for the least progress are a visitor-visa-then-switch plan, a “guaranteed” sponsorship package, and a one-year college programme bought purely for its work-permit afterglow. All three sell hope where the rules sell a process. Source: gov.uk switching rules; community loss reports, Nairaland and r/Nigeria, 2025-2026.

Visitor-visa-then-switch. Paying for a UK or Gulf visitor visa hoping to “sort something out” once you land is the most common dead end. Visitor status carries no work rights, and the Immigration Rules block switching a Standard Visitor visa into almost every long-term route from inside the country. You leave and reapply from Nigeria instead. A Dubai tourist visa follows the same logic at a lower price, ~₦146,750-₦461,200 across the 30/60/90-day tiers: cheap to enter, but it adds no qualifying status toward a later UK or Canada application.

“Guaranteed” sponsorship packages. No licensed UK employer sells a CoS, and no genuine Canadian employer sells an LMIA-backed offer, to a stranger for a fee. The CoS costs your employer £239 and costs you ₦0 — since 9 April 2025 a sponsor passing that charge to a worker is committing a compliance breach. Nigerians in an r/Nigeria thread on 16 September 2025 named a specific case: “Even the NIUK community the leader was sellig fake COS cashing out until he was called out.” Verify any offer against the free public registers first — the full checklist is at avoid visa scams in Nigeria; the “CoS for sale” pattern is dismantled at the fake-job-offer scam.

A one-year college programme bought purely for a work permit. Marketed as the fast lane into Canada, a short, low-cost private-college diploma can leave graduates without enough qualifying Canadian work experience before their permit expires. Length and eligibility both hinge on the specific institution and programme, not on an agent’s promise. Confirm a school’s designated status yourself before you pay tuition.

Your next step

Start here for how to relocate to Canada from Nigeria, or the UK, without wasting a naira on the wrong lane: pick from the table above before you research a single country. Have the skill and the offer? Go to UK Skilled Worker visa from Nigeria. Have the degree and the funds? Start with UK Student visa from Nigeria. Neither, but a strong profile? Canada proof of funds from Nigeria is where the PR-points route actually starts. None of the three yet? Spend the next months building one, not a visitor-visa stamp.

Frequently asked questions

Is Canada still accepting Nigerians relocating in 2026?

Yes. Canada still processes and approves Nigerian applications across Express Entry, PNP, study permits and work permits in 2026 — there is no blanket refusal of Nigerian applicants. What tightened is scrutiny on proof-of-funds evidence, not eligibility itself. A Nairaland claim from January 2021 that "Canada rejected 83% of Nigerians" is an unsourced forum headline, not an IRCC statistic.

How much does it cost to relocate from Nigeria to Canada?

It depends on the route. Express Entry PR needs settlement funds of about ₦16.6 million for a single applicant, or ₦30.9 million for a family of four, at ₦1,132/CAD (July 2026) — money you must hold, not spend. A study permit adds a locked GIC sum on top; confirm the live figure on canada.ca.

Is relocating to Canada from Nigeria worth it?

There is no single answer, but it is a trade you can price. The study route locks up ₦18-24 million before you earn a naira. The PR route pays off once Canadian credentials convert into income above what you left behind. Community accounts split both ways: a Nairaland thread from October 2022 marks seven settled years in Canada, while an agent posting in r/Nigeria in September 2025 wrote of his own three years in the UK, 'I don't recommend it.' Both are individual accounts, not data.

Can I japa without IELTS?

Only on specific routes. UK Skilled Worker accepts a degree taught in English instead of a test. Canada Express Entry has no such exemption — a language test is a mandatory document. A UK Standard Visitor visa needs no test at all, but it carries no route to settlement.

Can I relocate without a job offer?

Yes, on one route covered here: Canada's Express Entry awards points for a job offer but does not require one. UK Skilled Worker and Health and Care Worker visas both require a job offer from a licensed sponsor as a hard gate.

Which japa route is fastest?

Fastest decision, not fastest to relocate. UK Skilled Worker and Student visas both process in about 3 weeks from biometrics once your CoS or CAS is issued. Reaching that point is what varies — a sponsored offer takes months to land, and Canada adds IRCC's 6-month post-invitation standard on top of a draw-dependent wait for the invitation itself.
