2026 Nigerian Passport Renewal Abroad: London to Dubai

If you live in Nigeria, use the Nigerian passport renewal guide instead — this page is for renewers in London, Atlanta, New York, Washington DC, Dubai/Abu Dhabi, Toronto and every other diaspora hub. You still renew through passport.immigration.gov.ng, the same NIS portal, but you pay a separate US-dollar tariff and run into mission-specific problems the general renewal steps don’t cover. This guide answers three things the portal and mission FAQs skip: which mission actually answers its phone, how to fix “contactless app is not available for your processing country,” and the timing trap that can leave you without a passport while a foreign visa or status renewal is still live.

Renewing from London, Atlanta, Dubai and other diaspora missions

London has the deepest paper trail. Per one dated r/Nigeria renewer report, the contactless timeline ran: eligibility check, face biometrics and fingerprint verification finished by 19 February, old passport posted to the High Commission via Royal Mail Special Delivery on 23 February, status reading Application Vetting — Completed by 4 March. A second London renewer who posted the same week, 23 February, received the new booklet on 26 March — “a month and some change” (sea_lurker, r/Nigeria). New York and Washington DC share one theme: the embassy phone is close to useless. A 2021 applicant trying to book a New York appointment found “Innovate says to contact the embassy but embassy never answers their phone” and eventually booked through nigeriahouse.com instead. In DC, another applicant walked in without an appointment after checking Google and Yelp reviews for confirmation that walk-ins were being served. Atlanta, Dubai/Abu Dhabi and Toronto renewers post to the same forums, but no dated turnaround report for those three missions turned up in our review — if you’re renewing from one of them, track your own file with the NIS passport status check guide rather than relying on someone else’s timeline.

Fixing “contactless app is not available for your processing country”

In short: this error has two distinct causes — an unmet eligibility rule (unpaid booklet fee, or outside the 18-60 renewal-only band) or a portal-side display bug that shows the same message to correctly-eligible, already-paid applicants. The standard fix — confirm your booklet fee is paid and that you fall inside the 18-to-60 renewal-only band the Nigeria Immigration Service applies to contactless self-enrolment — is covered in the Nigerian passport renewal guide. What that page doesn’t cover is the second failure mode: a banner-only bug reported by renewers who’ve already cleared every eligibility check. One UK applicant wrote, “there’s not [a] clickable option to do contactless. The 'Contactless Opt-In' is just a banner. And when I independently go to the NIS app to do contactless, it gives an eligibility failed message” (i_waya, r/Nigeria, June 2026). Another renewer confirmed the message appears even with the right country selected: “I keep getting this error... I have double checked the country I selected and it is definitely UK” (Brilliant-Fig-7680, r/Nigeria, June 2026).

1. Re-confirm your booklet fee shows PAID, not “processing,” on your dashboard.
2. Update or reinstall the NIS Mobile app — an iPhone biometric-capture bug around January 2026 produced the same symptom and was later fixed.
3. Retry after 24-48 hours; several r/Nigeria renewers report the banner clears with no account change.
4. If “eligibility failed” persists, stop looping — book the in-embassy appointment the app itself offers.
5. If no channel responds, escalate through your mission’s X (Twitter) or WhatsApp contact rather than the phone (see the mission table above).

The renewal-while-abroad timing trap

In short: renewing — contactless or in person — means posting your only Nigerian passport to the mission for weeks, and Nigeria issues no temporary substitute; if a foreign visa or status renewal needs that same document at the same time, you can end up with no valid travel document at all. Source: reasoned from the mandatory old-passport-surrender step in NIS renewal guidance; no single official page states this trade-off.

Contactless doesn’t change the outcome here — step six of the standard flow is still mailing your old passport to your High Commission or consulate, and it stays with them through vetting, printing and dispatch. In the best-documented cases — the dated London r/Nigeria reports above — that is roughly a month. Neither the Nigeria Immigration Service nor the missions publish a service-level target, so treat a longer wait as possible rather than as a known figure. If, in that same window, you’re also mid-process on a UK visa extension, a US status renewal, a Canadian permit renewal, or any other application that requires your host country’s immigration authority to hold or inspect your physical passport, you can be left without a usable travel document for both processes simultaneously — Nigeria offers no interim booklet for this route.

The sequencing rule: whichever process needs physical possession of your passport, finish or pause that one first, or get written confirmation from the host authority that it can proceed on a certified copy alone, before you post your Nigerian passport in for renewal. If your existing passport is already expired and you need to travel urgently, that’s a different, faster problem than a routine renewal — don’t conflate the two.

Diaspora renewal fee in $ (2026)

In short: according to Nigeria Immigration Service fee notices, diaspora renewers pay a separate USD tariff, not the naira fee converted — $150 for the 32-page and $230 for the 64-page booklet, roughly ₦231,000 and ₦354,200 at this site’s ₦1,540/$ rate (24 July 2026). The Nigeria Immigration Service announced on 28 August 2025 that the naira passport fee would double from 1 September 2025 — to ₦100,000 for the 32-page and ₦200,000 for the 64-page — and stated in the same notice that the diaspora USD tariff was unchanged at $150 and $230. That is why the dollar price did not move when the naira one did.

Your own mission may not quote those exact numbers. The Nigerian Consulate General, Atlanta publishes $142 for the 32-page and $242 for the 64-page/10-year on its own fee page — and a $162 64-page/5-year option the NIS notice does not list at all. Which of the two figures your mission bills, and whether courier charges sit on top, is unconfirmed (data_gap); the portal shows your exact amount before you pay, so read that screen rather than any published table, including this one.
