UK Visa Photo Requirements From Nigeria: Skip It — VFS Captures Yours

Most UK visa photo requirements from Nigeria are already met for you: VFS Global captures your image live at your biometrics appointment in Lagos or Abuja, so there’s nothing to upload. That removes the “passport photograph” fee some agents add. This page covers the rare exception and two rules a generic photo tool gets wrong.

UK visa photo requirements from Nigeria: do you need to upload one?

In short: no — for most routes applied for from Nigeria, UKVI never asks you to upload a photo. Your facial image is captured live at VFS Global’s Lagos or Abuja visa application centre, alongside your fingerprints, during the biometrics appointment your visa fee already covers. The gov.uk apply-to-come-to-the-UK service has no photo-upload step for entry-clearance routes. You submit the form, pay the fee, then book a biometrics appointment with VFS Global Lagos/Abuja, where staff take fingerprints and a digital photograph in one sitting — full sequence: UK visa biometrics at VFS Global Lagos/Abuja, part of the wider UK visa from Nigeria process. One route does ask for an uploaded photo — the UK Electronic Travel Authorisation. It doesn’t apply to Nigerians: the ETA is only for visa-exempt nationals, and Nigerians apply for a full Standard Visitor visa instead, with the photo step replaced by VFS Global’s live capture, the same substitution that applies on the passport itself. The one case where you do upload a photo — and the spec if you’re asked

In short: UKVI only asks a Nigeria-based applicant to upload a photo when they’re formally exempt from attending VFS in person — a documented medical or mobility exemption is the usual trigger. If you can’t attend VFS, UKVI can accept a submitted photo instead. Check it against these five points before you submit:

1. Background. Plain and light — cream or light grey, not patterned or shadowed.
2. Eyes. No glasses glare or tinted lenses hiding the eyes.
3. Head size and file spec. At least 600 × 750 pixels, 50KB–10MB (gov.uk’s digital-photo tool); on a printed reference, 29–34mm head height on a 45mm × 35mm print.
4. Recency. Not out of date — gov.uk’s passport rule, “taken in the last month,” is the safer benchmark until your application confirms its own window.
5. Resolution. No WhatsApp copies. Its default compression can drop a forwarded photo below the pixel and file-size minimums above — export straight from the camera roll instead, the same fix that clears the US DS-160 photo page's equivalent trap.

Children and head coverings — where a generic photo tool gets it wrong

In short: children — including infants — are photographed individually at VFS Global, with no adult in frame. A baby under one who can’t support their own head may be held by a hand kept out of shot. Children. A baby or toddler needs their own individual photograph — no parent’s hand, arm or face in frame. Exception: a child under one who can’t support their own head may lie on a plain, light-coloured sheet, photographed from above, with the supporting hand out of shot. Fingerprints are separate, only from age 5, so a younger child is photographed but not fingerprinted.

Head coverings. A hijab, headscarf or medically-required covering is permitted, as long as the full face, chin to forehead, stays visible with no shadow across it. A tool tuned to treat head coverings as an automatic rejection will tell you to remove one; gov.uk’s own guidance doesn’t.

Red flag: nobody legitimately charges you for a “UK visa passport photograph.” VFS Global captures it free as part of the biometrics appointment your visa fee already covers. An agent adding a photo fee, or insisting on a printed photo for a standard appointment, is padding the bill the same way visa-agent scams do.
